Photo to 3D Print in a Minute: How Our AI Studio Works

How does a photo become a 3D model?

There are four steps and all but the last one run without you. One: you upload a single photo of an object (JPG, PNG or WebP). Two: the photo goes to our own graphics card, which sits in the same workshop in Gorica pri Slivnici where we print — not a cloud service somewhere abroad. Three: the resulting mesh is prepared for printing automatically: we try to close holes, drop stray fragments, simplify to roughly 120,000 triangles, rotate the model onto its most stable face and set it on the bed. Four: you review the model in the browser, download it as a file, or press „Order a print“ to send it into a quote.

We measured how long that takes instead of guessing. In a bench of five photos on 18 September 2026 the median was 40 seconds per model, and the slowest took 54 seconds. At busy times a job waits in the queue, with progress shown on the model card throughout. Premium takes a few minutes longer, because it is a different pipeline with more detail and texture.

What does the model cost, and what does the print cost?

They are two separate prices. You pay for the model in credits inside the AI Studio. You pay for the print by quote, calculated by the real BambuStudio slicer from actual filament use and print time — exactly as for any uploaded STL or 3MF. A credit costs €0.10, and larger packs cost less per credit.

Credits are valid for 6 months from each purchase and the oldest are spent first. A failed generation is refunded automatically, so a bad run does not cost you a credit.

A worked example: from photo to printed part

You photograph a figurine on a calm background. The Standard generation costs 3 credits, or €0.30, and takes about 50 seconds. You download the model as STL and at the same time send it into the quote, picking PLA and a height of 80 mm. A part like that weighs roughly 40 g and prints in about 2 hours. Using the formula published on the quote page — a €2.50 base fee + material 40 g × €0.026/g + machine time 2 h × €1.80/h + electricity 2 h × €0.07/h — the print is about €7.28. Together with the generation, €7.58. No VAT is charged, shipping inside Slovenia is €8.90 and local pickup is free. What works well, and what does not?

The best results come from a single object on a calm, plain background, evenly lit and shot slightly from above so three sides are visible. That is not an aesthetic note: from one image the AI is guessing the shape of the back, and the less clutter there is, the less it has to guess.

Works well: figurines and statues, toys, plants, shoes, souvenirs, pets, and tools with a distinctive silhouette.

Works badly: shiny and chrome objects (reflections confuse the shape), transparent objects, very thin surfaces, group photos, screenshots and pictures with hard shadows.

What the AI cannot do matters just as much: exact measurements, threads, and parts that must fit an existing object. A model from a photo approximates a shape; it does not measure one. If you need a part that has to fit something, the right route is custom 3D modelling or 3D scanning of the physical object.

Standard or Premium?

Standard, at 3 credits, runs on our card and is the default choice: fast, cheap and good enough for ornaments, figures, souvenirs and physical sketches of an idea. Premium, at 20 credits, is for the cases where Standard loses a detail you actually need — a face, lettering, a fine texture. Premium also accepts a description instead of a photo and returns GLB, STL, OBJ and FBX, while Standard returns 3MF and STL.

A practical rule: try Standard first. When the first result disappoints, a second attempt with a better photo usually helps more than a more expensive model.

When is the free AI generator enough?

The free AI 3D model generator makes up to five models a day with no account and no credits. The difference is in what you get:

If you only want the printed object and five attempts a day is enough, the free generator is all you need. If you want the file, Premium, a description instead of a photo, or a history of your models, the right place is the AI Studio. Both routes end in the same print quote.

What happens to my photos and files?

The files you create are yours, and you may use them commercially. Generated files are kept for 90 days, so download them in time; files behind an order are kept longer, because we need them for printing and for any warranty claim. The details are in our terms of use and privacy policy.
