ASA for outdoor 3D prints — UV and weather resistant
ASA is the material to pick when a printed part has to live outside year-round in Slovenia: full sun on a south-facing balcony, winter frost, summer rain, or under the bonnet of a car. We print it in black on an enclosed Bambu Lab P2S so larger pieces stay flat — quote in 30 seconds, €4 minimum per item.
Material: ASA Black · UV-stable for 5+ years outside · Heat-stable to ~95°C · Automotive-grade polymer
A printed bracket on a sunny balcony tells the truth about which material you picked. PLA cracks within a season, even PETG dulls and yellows after a year. ASA (acrylonitrile styrene acrylate) is the same chemistry the automotive industry uses for door mirrors, grilles and exterior trim — designed from the start to keep its colour, surface and impact strength under direct sun, summer heat and winter frost. That is why every outdoor and automotive print we send out leaves on ASA.
On our Bambu Lab P2S, ASA prints inside the enclosure, with the chamber holding warmth so the layers fuse cleanly and the corners do not lift. That detail matters more than people think — ASA tends to warp on open-frame printers, and most of the "bad ASA" stories online are really stories about printing it in the wrong machine. With the right setup, the parts come off the bed dimensionally accurate and ready to weather a Slovenian year.
Technical properties
- Density: ~1.07 g/cm³ — slightly lighter than PETG, similar feel to ABS.
- Print temperature: Nozzle 250–270°C, bed 90–100°C, enclosed chamber preferred.
- Strength: ~45 MPa tensile, very high impact, glass transition ~100°C — handles a parked-in-sun car cabin.
- Specifics: Excellent UV stability, weather resistant, paintable, glueable with acetone or MEK. Low odour compared to ABS.
Typical use cases
- →Garden hose holders, drip-line clips and irrigation manifolds that live outside year-round.
- →Outdoor signage, address plates, mailbox numbers and cafe-board parts that face direct sun.
- →Automotive trim clips, vent louvres, dashboard inserts and engine-bay brackets where heat plus UV would cook PLA in weeks.
- →Balcony hardware: planter brackets, railing clips, sun-shade fittings and cable routing.
- →Rain-exposed enclosures for sensors, doorbells, security cameras and weather stations.
- →Replacement parts for outdoor furniture, BBQs and grills where the original plastic has gone brittle in the sun.

ASA outdoor printing questions
Why ASA instead of PETG for outdoor parts?+
PETG holds up well to water and light heat, but its colour and surface degrade noticeably under direct UV after 6–12 months — yellowing, micro-cracking, surface chalking. ASA is engineered for exactly this exposure: it keeps its colour, gloss and impact resistance for years in full Slovenian sun. If a part lives outside permanently, ASA is the right answer.
How long does an ASA 3D printed part last outside in Slovenia?+
On Slovenian roofs, balconies and gardens we expect ASA prints to last 5+ years of full outdoor exposure with no significant cracking and only minor colour change. ASA is the same family of polymer used for car side mirrors and exterior trim — it is purpose-designed for this kind of life.
Can I print car interior or engine-bay parts in ASA?+
Yes — ASA is one of the better DIY automotive printing materials. Its glass transition is around 100°C, well above what a parked-in-sun cabin reaches. For genuine engine-bay heat (>80°C steady), we recommend going one step further with ASA-CF or letting us advise on a higher-temperature filament for that specific part.
Does ASA need an enclosed printer?+
Yes for best results, and we have one. ASA shrinks a little more than PETG, so without a controlled chamber large parts can warp or split mid-print. We print all ASA jobs on our enclosed Bambu Lab P2S to keep walls flat and layer adhesion strong, especially on parts over ~150 mm.
